New CISO Priorities Reshape Digital Defense

We sat down with him to discuss the fundamental shifts redefining digital defense. Our conversation explored the CISO’s transformation from a technical guardian to a strategic business partner, the revolutionary impact of AI on security operations, and the cultural and technical hurdles of implementing comprehensive Zero Trust frameworks. We also delved into the board-level urgency surrounding software supply chain security and the maturation of multi-cloud defense strategies.

The CISO role has evolved into a strategic business enabler, requiring a balance between security and agility. Can you share a specific example of how you architected a defense that enhanced business velocity, and what metrics you used to demonstrate its success to the board?

Absolutely. There’s a persistent, outdated belief that security is a brake pedal. We’ve worked hard to reframe it as the high-performance suspension and steering system that allows the business to move faster, safely. One of our most successful initiatives involved integrating security directly into the DevOps pipeline, a practice often called DevSecOps. Instead of having a separate security review gate at the end of the development cycle that created a bottleneck, we embedded automated vulnerability scanning and policy checks directly into the code repository and build processes. The result was that developers received security feedback in near real-time, allowing them to fix issues on the spot rather than weeks later. When presenting to the board, we moved past purely technical metrics like “vulnerabilities patched.” Instead, we showed them a 30% reduction in deployment lead times for new features and a significant decrease in the cost of remediation, as fixing bugs earlier is exponentially cheaper. We framed it as accelerating market entry and improving developer productivity, which are metrics that resonate powerfully in the executive suite.

Security teams are moving AI deployments from experimental to production scale to manage threat volume. Beyond automating routine tasks, could you detail an entirely new defensive capability AI has enabled for your team and how it improved detection accuracy or response times?

This is truly where the game is changing. For years, we’ve talked about AI handling the repetitive, high-volume alerts, and that’s valuable, but it’s just the beginning. The real breakthrough is in AI’s ability to function as a force multiplier for our human analysts, giving them a form of analytical ESP. We recently deployed a machine learning model that ingests petabytes of network traffic, endpoint logs, and cloud telemetry data. Its sole purpose is to identify subtle, low-and-slow attack patterns that would be completely invisible to a human, or even to traditional rule-based systems. It might correlate a minor login anomaly in one cloud environment with a seemingly unrelated data access pattern in another, hours apart, and flag it as the signature of a sophisticated campaign. This isn’t just automation; it’s a net-new sensory capability. It has drastically cut down our dwell time for advanced threats because we’re not waiting for a major disruptive event to occur; we’re catching the faint whispers of an intrusion at its earliest stage.

Implementing a zero trust framework is often a multi-year initiative involving significant cultural change. What are the biggest non-technical hurdles to this transition, and what steps do you take to embed continuous verification into workflows with developers and infrastructure engineers?

The technology for zero trust is the easy part, relatively speaking. The single biggest hurdle is dismantling decades of ingrained culture built around the idea of a trusted internal network. It’s a fundamental psychological shift. We had engineers who genuinely felt we were slowing them down by asking them to re-authenticate or by enforcing granular access policies on services that used to be wide open internally. Overcoming this requires relentless communication and collaboration. We didn’t just hand down edicts. We held workshops with development and infrastructure teams, showing them how this approach would protect the very applications they were building. We embedded security champions within their teams to act as translators and advocates. The key was to make continuous verification a shared responsibility, not a security tax. We focused on building “paved roads”—secure, pre-approved patterns and tools—that made it easier for them to do the right thing than the wrong thing.

With software supply chain security now a board-level priority, there’s a natural tension between rigorous vetting and the business demand for speed. Can you walk me through your risk-based approach for scrutinizing a new open-source dependency versus a critical third-party cloud service?

This tension is something we live with daily. You can’t apply the same level of scrutiny to everything, or you’d grind the business to a halt. Our approach is tiered and risk-based. For a new open-source dependency, our first line of defense is automation. We use software bill of materials (SBOM) tools and automated scanners to immediately check for known vulnerabilities, license issues, and the overall health of the project—like its maintenance frequency. If it’s for a non-critical internal tool, that might be enough. However, if that same library is destined for a core, internet-facing application that handles sensitive data, the scrutiny intensifies. We’ll do manual code reviews and threat modeling. For a critical third-party cloud service, the process is entirely different. It’s less about the code and more about the provider’s operational security, compliance certifications, data handling policies, and incident response capabilities. This involves lengthy questionnaires, contract reviews, and examining their audit reports. The level of due diligence is directly proportional to the blast radius if that component or service were to be compromised.

As cloud security matures, many leaders seek unified platforms to manage complex multi-cloud environments. What key capabilities do you look for in these platforms, and how do they help you maintain consistent policy and visibility across diverse cloud providers?

In the early days of cloud, we were essentially adapting on-prem tools, which felt like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. Now, we demand cloud-native solutions. The most critical capability I look for in a unified platform is the ability to provide a single pane of glass for visibility and policy enforcement. Each cloud provider has its own security center, its own terminology, its own way of doing things. This creates enormous operational overhead and visibility gaps. A strong unified platform normalizes that data, allowing us to write a security policy once—say, “no unencrypted data storage”—and have the platform translate and enforce that across AWS S3 buckets, Azure Blob Storage, and Google Cloud Storage. Another key feature is infrastructure-as-code security. The platform must be able to scan our Terraform or CloudFormation templates before deployment to catch misconfigurations before they ever become a reality in our production environment. This prevents problems rather than just detecting them.

Global privacy regulations are now driving fundamental technical architecture decisions. Can you describe an instance where a privacy requirement, like data minimization, forced a significant change in a system’s design, and what trade-offs your team had to manage?

We had a customer analytics platform that was designed years ago to collect a vast amount of user interaction data, with the philosophy of “collect everything now, figure out how to use it later.” When GDPR came into force, that architecture became an enormous liability. The principle of data minimization forced us to completely re-architect the data ingestion pipeline. We couldn’t just store massive, unstructured event logs anymore. We had to work closely with the product and business intelligence teams to define, with surgical precision, exactly which data points were essential for the system to function and provide value. The trade-off was a perceived loss of flexibility for our data science team, who were used to having this massive data lake to explore. The negotiation was intense. We had to demonstrate that by being more intentional with our data collection, we were not only ensuring compliance and reducing risk but also improving data quality and focus, ultimately leading to better, more reliable insights.

Given the persistent cybersecurity talent shortage, many organizations are developing internal career pathways. Could you outline the key components of a successful program that transitions employees from other technology roles into your security team and how you measure its effectiveness?

The talent shortage is a reality we can’t just hire our way out of; we have to build our own. Our internal transition program is one of my proudest achievements. The first component is proactive identification. We work with managers in IT, infrastructure, and software development to spot individuals who exhibit a “security mindset”—people who are naturally curious, detail-oriented, and enjoy complex problem-solving. Second, we create a structured apprenticeship. This isn’t just shadowing; it’s a rotational program where they spend time in different security functions like incident response, application security, and cloud security, working on real tasks with a dedicated mentor. Third, we fund their formal training and certifications to build that foundational knowledge. We measure success not just by the number of people who transition, but by their long-term retention and performance. Our key metric is the “90-day-ready” rate—how quickly they can operate independently on core tasks—and their promotion velocity compared to external hires. We’ve found our internal movers often become our strongest performers because they already possess deep institutional knowledge.

What is your forecast for enterprise cybersecurity?

My forecast is that security will complete its evolution from a technical cost center to a core business differentiator. For years, we’ve fought for a budget by highlighting fear, uncertainty, and doubt. The future belongs to CISOs who can articulate security’s value in terms of business enablement and competitive advantage. Companies that can prove their security and privacy posture is superior won’t just be avoiding breaches; they will win more deals, attract better partners, and command deeper customer trust. We will see security metrics become a standard part of quarterly business reviews, sitting right alongside revenue and customer acquisition costs. Technology like AI and automation will handle the tactical defense, freeing up human security professionals to focus on strategic risk management, product innovation, and business alignment. Security won’t be something you do to the business; it will be an inseparable part of how the business succeeds.
