The distinction really comes down to whether the software solves a momentary task or a persistent business problem. A feature is essentially a tool to complete one specific activity—think of it as a single button to upload a file or generate a report. A workflow engine, however, connects multiple people, systems, and decisions into one continuous, fluid process that adapts to the specific way a company breathes. For example, in a standard HR tool, requesting leave might just be a digital form, but in a workflow-driven platform, that request automatically triggers permissions based on employee grade, checks compliance rules, and notifies the right managers across Finance and HR. The challenge for modern developers isn’t just adding the next shiny feature; it’s designing software that is flexible enough to mirror the complex, often messy reality of how different organizations actually operate.

Can you describe the “invisible” complexity that exists behind a seemingly simple user action, such as a new hire joining a large global company?

Most people only see the tip of the iceberg, like a new marketing hire in a Singapore office filling out a few digital forms and feeling like the process was “simple.” Behind the scenes, a true enterprise workflow engine is performing a massive, silent orchestration involving dozens of interconnected steps. The moment that “submit” button is clicked, the system is simultaneously provisioning email access through IT, routing salary data to payroll, and initiating background checks with security teams. It’s also triggering equipment requests for the right department and alerting the reporting manager to set up a training schedule.
